UP North

“Up North” by Suzanne Kindler

Our friend Stephanie sent us this delightful little poem by Suzanne Kindler, which was penned in 1996 from what we could find. But we couldn’t find much else about Suzanne. If you know more about Suzanne Kindler we would love to find more information on her and the roots of this poem.

Now, go escape to the pine trees.

Up North

It’s the place people go to escape,
a place made of cabins, pine trees and lakes.
But no matter how far you drive,
there’s no sign to say “You’ve arrived.”
So just follow your heart til you find,
your special place that brings peace of mind.
As you breathe in the air and unwind,
your cares are all left behind.
It’s no mystery where the northwoods start.
When you’re “up north,”
you’ll know in your heart.

— Suzanne Kindler 1996

  1. Isn’t it ironic how the lyrics of Old Crow Medicine Show’s song “Wagon Wheel” start out: “Headed down South to the land of the pines…”

The “land of the pines” appears to be a relative thing, like so much else in life.

  2. Beautiful Stefanie! Love the UP too. I miss it so. Hope to be coming home soon to stay! Need time up north bad.

I am a Michigander living in Texas the last 9 years. I go home once a year, and long for the woods every day. When I try to explain what “up north” is, most people say, Michigan IS up north-well, not really.

Saw the Up North poem in a framed print in a cottage that we stayed at in Hayward, Wi., loved it, but where can we find a framed print of this. We have looked, but cannot find one. Of the back of the print it said ” Up North by Suzanne Kindler, 1962. If anyone knows where to find a framed print, please let me know. Lorie

That should be 1992 instead of 1962. Sorry. Lorie

I keep a copy of the poem under a picture of my snow covered cabin in Pine Oaks, Montmorency County. The poem gives me much solace as I set at my desk in Texas, desirous of being Up North.
